Nokia Maps for iOS: Why Is Something So Good So Ugly?
Nokia Maps (officially titled "Here") is a potential godsend for anyone fed up with Apple's subpar offering. It's blazingly fast, routes via public transportation with ease, and doesn't mix up Manhattan with Siberia. Unfortunately, it's bogglingly hard on the eyes. More »

Android 4.2 called ‘one of the most bug-ridden releases since Honeycomb’

Android 4.2 called 'one of the most bug-ridden releases since Honeycomb'

Published on BGR | shared via feedly mobile

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean received widespread acclaim as one of the best updates to the Android operating system to come around in some time. Android 4.2, however, isn't getting the same praise. Android Police, which first broke the story about Android 4.2 lacking the month of December in its contacts app, has done the dirty work of chronicling the problems encountered so far in Android 4.2 and has found a wide array of issues. Among other things, Android 4.2 renders Bluetooth "basically broken," creates random Windows Phone 8-like reboots, severely drains battery life and slows charging time. Taking all this into account, Android Police says that Android 4.2 is "one of the most bug-ridden releases since Honeycomb," which at least had the excuse of being the first version of Android designed for tablets.

Gibbs Unveils Quadski Amphibious Vehicle [VIDEO] [feedly]

It's kinda fast on both land and water too!

Gibbs Unveils Quadski Amphibious Vehicle [VIDEO]
Gibbs Quadski

Edging toward the shoreline atop what seemed to be an oversized all-terrain vehicle, the instructions issued by those standing aside were simple enough: Drive into the water.

I tried. My brain disobeyed.

Deploying some innate self-preservation device, my fingers refused to grip the throttle. There's something deeply unnatural about driving a vehicle from the land into the water. Perhaps that's one reason why it's taken the most intrepid of innovators decades to hone amphibious technology.

Finally, with the onlookers watching me idle, I inched ahead with a few spastic squeezes of the two-spring throttle. The Gibbs Quadski left the beach and entered a nameless lake next to a quarry east of Oxford, Michigan.

Sufficiently offshore in about three feet of water, I press a toggle switch below the handlebars and the wheels retract into the fiberglass composite hull. Five seconds later, the ATV completes its transition into a jet ski, and we're skipping across the water.

The Quadski is neither the world's most daunting off-road vehicle nor the most agile of personal watercraft--but it's the first to be enthrallingly adept at both.

Previous attempts to make a useful amphibian inevitably delivered on one surface and failed on the other. In the 1960s, Germans produced the Amphicar, which puttered about the water at about 8 miles an hour.

The Quadski is different. Surprisingly stable on both land and water, it is the first high-speed sports amphibian capable of reaching 45 miles per hour on both land and sea.

Executives with Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Gibbs Sports Amphibians introduced the Quadski to media members Monday. After spending some 20 years and $200 million in development, the single-passenger vehicles are slated to begin production at a nearby facility in mid-November.

Gibbs plans to produce 1,000 units in the first year of production before expanding for a global customer base. The Quadski will likely retail at approximately $40,000.

"With 1,000 units, we want to be careful, and not run before we can walk," said company founder Alan Gibbs.

Or in his case, float.

Gibbs first began experimenting with amphibious vehicles around 1994 in his native New Zealand, where he became frustrated that his boat would often get caught in the forceful tidal fluctuations on Kaipara Harbour.

His first big splash into the amphibious market came a decade later, when his company launched the Aquada, a three-person amphibian that looks like a conventional convertible.

Sir Richard Branson made headlines with the Aquada in 2004, when the Virgin magnate drove across the English Channel in 1 hour, 40 minutes, breaking the old amphibian record across the route by more than four hours. But a key supplier closed, and the Aquada never reached production.

About the same time, the company shifted its focus toward both the Quadski and larger 30-foot transports that hold promise for military and first-responder applications.

In building the Quadski, engineers knew exactly what, at least in theory, was needed to make the vehicle work. The problem, as with the Aquada, was finding compatible parts. They often had to be developed from scratch.

Neil Jenkins, the chairman of Gibbs, said he traveled the globe speaking with aerospace companies about building a jet propulsion system. He said they either told him it couldn't be done or that it required substantial changes.

"I needed it to be one-third the length and half the weight," Jenkins said, comparing it to the conventional marine jets suppliers offered him. Gibbs instead built its own, and the result is enough power and thrust to get the Quadski to planing speed in a matter of seconds--a key hurdle that Jenkins said other amphibious carmakers could not overcome.

Its engine is also lightweight. Gibbs equipped the Quadski with a 175-horsepower, 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine purchased from BMW, the same one found on the K1300 motorcycle. It is mated to a five-speed transmission with an automated clutch.

In the water, the 1,300-pound craft behaves like a traditional wave runner, and riders can plow through the wake of others' with gleeful abandon. The difference with the Quadski is that its stability is more comparable to a small boat--it's far less likely to capsize.

Promotional materials released by Gibbs show riders taking a break from riding and diving off the side of the Quadski. It never rocks. Considering it was a blustery gray day with temperatures in the 40s, I opted to skip the swim.

On land, the Quadski is a powerful beast. It delivers more power and torque than is necessary, and we charged around the gravel trails on the company's testing grounds. Drivers shift gears with a toggle switch on the left handlebar and automatically downshifts when the brakes are applied.

It's an all-around fun ride on both land and sea, and there's equal exhilaration in circumventing the tedious boat-ramp process.

The entire process feels like something that belongs in the new James Bond movie that hit theaters last week. But mention this to Jenkins, and he replies there's a key difference. The gadgets made famous by 007 are mostly the stuff of science fiction.

The Quadski, on the other hand, is here.

Mercedes-Benz ENER-G Force concept

Mercedes-Benz has created its share of iconic vehicles, but only one of them is currently on sale. (Time will tell on stuff like the SLS or C63 AMG.) Of course, we're talking about the Geländewagen, styled with a slide rule in the early '70s to military specifications, launched in 1979, and is still sold today in surprising quantities to armed forces, off-road enthusiasts, and the jet set alike. It's no wonder, then, that the GL-class—intended as a Geländewagen replacement—couldn't kill it. READ MORE ››

Windows 8 Tablets

I want one!!! Not the scaled down version but the full Windows 8 tablet...the one that can run desktop apps. And I do hope that OEMs would price it like the other tablets in the market...competitively. If that happens then Apple and Google will have a problem.

Right now, tablets are not as productive as their laptop counterparts. But if Windows 8 fulfills its promise, and is as affordable as it's competitors, then it will become a full hit.

Then a web app. As long as the computer you're using is on the same network as the phone, even if your smartphone is tucked in your bag or in your desk drawer, you can be notified when an SMS arrived, or if you want to send one, all you have to do is to click on the Chrome extension, if you're not using Chrome, just go to www.mightytext.com/app and log in with your Google Account deets (you have a Google Account for sure if you're using an Android phone) and type away. It can even alert you if you have an incoming call.

Virtual Keyboard: Android Ice Cream Sandwich vs iOS (iPad 2)

Comparing the two, I would go to with the Android keyboard. Some would argue that it's just the same since both are on-screen keyboards and nothing can be done especially about the tactile feedback. Yeah you can say that...but I think the difference lies on the screen size of the device. Since Android is generally landscape oriented...the keyboard is more naturally spread out, unlike the one in iOS where it's "cramped" sort of a way. And the key presses have more "feedback" if you may, though visual for that matter, on the Android than on the iOS tablet. I can say the same thing when it's in portrait mode.

"Invalid" login in Exchange in iPhone

A couple of weeks ago, while in the mall...I suddenly got a prompt/alert on my iPhone that I can't login of some sort to my Exchange account and it's prompting me to put in my password. This is the 1st time to get this alert and even after I input my password more than a dozen times, it was still giving me that "Invalid password" in Exchange. I tried changing my password for my Google Account and it still gave me that error prompt.

After fumbling in Google for solutions (saw in a couple of support group pages that this is a common problem)...I was brought to Google Accounts page where there is this 2-step verification. What I did was, I went thru with the verification and I was given 10mins to log on to my Exchange (Google sync) account on my iPhone which I did and that SOLVED THAT PROBLEM.

iOS 6 brings fragmentation to the iPhone

iOS 6 brings fragmentation to the iPhone

Published on BGR: The Three Biggest Letters In Tech | shared via feedly mobile

One of the main arguments against Google's Android operating system is the fragmentation that is spread across hundreds of devices and various software versions. Apple has even taken shots at the OS, highlighting how within a year, almost all iPhones are running the latest system version, compared to about 7% of Android users on Ice Cream Sandwich. But with the introduction of iOS 6, which the Cupertino-based company claims will deliver more than 200 new features, Apple may finally have to deal with fragmentation as well.

While the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 will be compatible with iOS 6, both devices will get a version of the software that forgoes key features. As noted by Ars Technica, Apple's impressive 3D Flyover feature and turn-by-turn voice navigation found within its new Maps app will only work on A5-powered devices, meaning the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad. To make matters worse, the iPhone 3GS doesn't support FaceTime and it won't be able to handle offline reading, shared Photo Streams, VIP lists or Flagged Smart mailboxes.

While the situation might not be as bad as many claim it is on Android, Apple will continue to face difficulties when attempting to keep its older hardware up-to-date.

Apple's list of feature limitations is as follows:

Features are subject to change. Not all features are available on all devices.

Some features may not be available in all countries or all areas. Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later. Cellular data charges may apply. Siri will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd generation) and requires Internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or all areas, and features may vary by area. Cellular data charges may apply. Shared Photo Streams requires iOS 6 on iPhone 4 or later or iPad 2 or later, or a Mac computer with OS X Mountain Lion. An up-to-date browser is required for accessing shared photo streams on the web. FaceTime over a cellular network requires iPhone 4S or iPad (3rd generation) with cellular data capability. Carrier data charges may apply. FaceTime is not available in all countries. VIP list and VIP and Flagged smart mailboxes will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later. Offline Reading List will be available on iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later. Made for iPhone hearing aids require iPhone 4S. Find My Friends and Find My iPhone enable you to locate iOS devices only when they are on and connected to a registered Wi-Fi network or have an active data plan. Not available in all areas.

No More Cables: OSX Mountain Lion Will Support AirPlay Mirroring

No More Cables: OSX Mountain Lion Will Support AirPlay Mirroring

Published on TechCrunch | shared via feedly mobile

Apple has made a ton of announcements during the keynote to its Worldwide Developer Conference. But one of the coolest updates to its OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion operating system is the addition of AirPlay Mirroring, which will let users directly stream content from their Macs to Apple TV and other supported devices.

AirPlay Mirroring was first announced for the iPad at last year's WWDC, but now the Apple team is extending it to even more parts of its device ecosystem. By adding it to OSX, users will no longer have to hook up cables to their Macs in order to stream video or games from their laptops to the biggest screen in the house. All they need is an Apple TV connected to their HDTV.

That not only makes it easier to share presentations and the like on the big screen, it also creates more functionality for the Apple TV and provides even more reason for enthusiasts to pick up the $99 device. We expect more updates for the Apple TV to be announced soon, so until then…

Apple reveals new AirPort Express with simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi, costs $99

Published on The Verge - All Posts | shared via feedly mobile

Along with all of the news today at WWDC, Apple has announced a new AirPort Express router that features a complete hardware redesign. The new version looks like a white Apple TV and loses the power adapter look of its predecessor. It also now supports simultaneous dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi. The previous version worked with both frequencies, but could not support the two at the same time. Additionally, the unit now has two ethernet ports, so you're no longer forced to connect every machine over Wi-Fi, and it has the same USB 2.0 and 3.5mm headphone jack as before. The new AirPort Express costs that same as its predecessor, at $99, and is available now.

Introducing the Instagram Socialmatic Concept Camera

It's going to be an expensive novelty "toy" but I think well worth it. Only difference with smartphones is it prints sticky pictures with QR codes

Introducing the Instagram Socialmatic Concept Camera

Published on Pinoy Tech Blog - The Philippines' Longest-running Technology Blog | shared via feedly mobile

Instagram fans would definitely want the Instagram Socialmatic Camera to be a reality. Its function is quite simple, take square photos, upload it to your Instagram account, and even print it ala Polaroid but on a sticky paper.

This digital camera is beautifully modeled after the Instagram icon. What's inside is WiFi to connect to the internet, Bluetooth to possibly transfer files to other devices, 16GB of storage, a 4:3 touchscreen, 2 different lenses, LED flash, a QR code reader, and it can also be used as a webcam. At least, that's how ADR studios who created this concept camera wants it to be like.

After taking your Instagram photo and uploading it to your account, you can also print it directly from the camera. It will use a sticky sheet (like Post-its) as paper so you can stick your picture anywhere you wish to. The printout will also have a QR code and your Instagram username for easy following.

Now if only they being making this a reality for the millions of Instagram lovers in the world. It feels weird to hold when taking photos but what the heck, take my money!

UPDATE: The Instagram Socialmatic Camera can now be funded in Indiegogo, a crowdfunding site. They're estimating a retail price of under $350. Ouch. In that case, I'll hold on to my money for now.

Pavizio X1 Android 4.0 Tablet

Saw this today at Toy Kingdom and it got me interested. It's a 7 inch Ice Cream Sandwich tablet with a capacitive screen using an ARM CPU and 8GB of disk space. What made it more interesting was the price, roughly P5500 only! Heck that's cheaper than the cheapest Ainol tablet.

It's China-made (what's not nowadays anyways). And has all the ports one could think of including an HDMI out. I haven't seen the display but from the specs sheet, it says that it's just 800 x 400 pixels. Fair enough for the price. Heck as long as it's got Android Market, has WiFi, why complain?

The Playbook Scare

Last night I had a scare, when I noticed that my Blackberry Playbook wasn't charging and of course, wasn't turning on.
Scared me that my tablet was bricked...damn waste of good hardware. I even tried to reset it and all I got was a red LED lighting up for a few seconds then off it goes.

So I searched the interwebs and read about this kind of a problem with how RIM managed the Playbook's charging procedure. You see, the tablet needs to be on for it to charge, which means, it needs a small amount of charge in the batteries for it to charge, thus, when fully discharged, the Playbook won't charge at all. Confusing huh! Well, Blackberry has posted a "Knowledge Base" about it and it's still confusing.

Anyways, so I decided to follow a common path in dealing with the problem wherein I have to plug the Playbook to it's charger, wait for the red LED to light up, then unplug it when the LED disappears then plug it again, repeating the process for...they say around 10x, but I say, until the battery with a lightning bolt symbol appears on the screen and the LED turns into flashing yellow. By that time, you can now breathe a sigh of relief as your Playbook is now charging...which I did! Sigh-ed! Whew!

Right now I'm not using a laptop anymore, I have 2 tablet computers and the desktop at home. For my mobile computing needs, the tablet is more than enough to satisfy it. It is then unacceptable to lose a tablet now because I use them, especially the Playbook for my lectures. Now I have to be very careful when it comes to the Playbook's battery charge.

MetroTwit

MetroTwit is a new Twitter client that is designed with the Metro UI of Windows 8 in mind. It has a minimalistic design that will fit well with Windows 8. From the twitter clients that I had used, and still using, I've chosen TweetDeck to be my default app for tweeting. Thus I will be comparing MetroTwit with TweetDeck a lot.

MetroTwit is a promising twitter client unfortunately, it insisted on being a stand-alone app, in a world where it is becoming more of a browser-centric environment. Some one using a computer, would rather have one application running and have everything he/she wants within that application. This is why, a lot of programmers and developers are focusing their efforts to web-based applications.

TweetDeck started out with an AIR based app, but soon decided to go web-based, this way, the app itself can run on more platforms and not limited to a single one.

After using MetroTwit for an hour and a half, I went back to using TweetDeck. Not because I like TweetDeck (I'm trying to be objective here), but because, after leaving the desktop for a short while, when I got back, the application slowed down (response). Although Google Chrome would also slow down when there are lots of extensions are installed, but once all fired up, Google Chrome or Tweetdeck for that matter will run smoothly.

In summary, MetroTwit can have some followers, but I'm very skeptic as to how long.

My BlackBerry

If by the 29th (the date Globe will migrate my account from my old BlackBerry Max My Super Unli to the new iPhone Plan 1799 Unlisurf Combo) I cannot use my BlackBerry (BBM) on wifi, then it's really going to the shelf for my trusty QWERTY phone.

While in the mall earlier, I realized, that perhaps I will really be sticking it out with the iPhone as the primary phone on Globe and an Android smartphone on Smart until my contract expires on both. I still have a year on SUN and 2 years on Globe, which means a new phone every year from my providers (that is of course if I decide to stay, which I will perhaps because I want to hold on to my numbers).

I'm hoping that when my contract expires with Globe, a new iPhone #S is out to replace this one that I have now. And with Sun, if BlackBerry is still alive by then, and they've released new phones with BlackBerry 10  OS, with mobile hotspots feature, then I think it's the perfect time to switch back to the BlackBerry world.

I'll always suggest get the WiFi version & just subscribe to an unlimited data plan on a Mobile Wireless Router (MiFi).

By doing so, you spend less on the device & data is not limited to one device. And if ever you decide to change environments (e.g. iOS to Android to BlackBerry), less hassle for you since the router is still the same.

Wi-tribe Signal Testing continues

Going on to my 2nd month with the Wi-tribe Mobile Router, there's only been a few places where I don't get a signal or a very weak signal...one of these places is Rockwell....Wi-tribe is totally useless inside Powerplant Mall, heck even my Sun cellular phone becomes a useless brick inside the mall.

At Starbucks in the Block stores still in Rockwell, the signal was very weak, as in only 1 signal LED was lighting up and though it still gave me consistent fast speeds, the signal was erratic.

Another place that has a weak to no signal is inside Greenbelt 5 mall. But in the garden and outside the structure, signal  and speed is great.

Another thing that I like with the service is even with a weak signal, speed isn't compromised. Unlike the usual USB modem sticks and cellular-based mifi devices, where signal downgrades to slower speeds when weak signal is encountered.

Wireless Mobile Internet

If your planning to get one, don't expect performance to be at par with wired (DSL or Cable) internet. So don't expect to use it for your "torrenting" needs.

Wireless Mobile Internet was designed for mobile computing. That's why I believe that dreaming for a fast mobile wireless speed is rubbish. What's the point of aiming for a 20Mbps speed, when most would just used it on their cellphones, browsing or updating their social networking status.

It's the businesses that will benefit fast wireless internet. Unfortunately, most of us equate fast wireless internet to an easy fix of downloading torrents. And if you don't know the factors that can affect connection speeds on a wireless connection, then you better just shut up and subscribe to a wired connection.

2 days of Ice Cream Sandwich

So far so good! Noticed a significant increase in responsiveness to touch, taps and launching apps. The teal highlights and new color palette sure is a welcome sight. And of course, the Roboto font gives more detail and better reading environment.

What's New in Ice Cream Sandwich part 1

The splash screen is different. It's not the fluctuating, hypnotic purple honeycomb anymore, now it's more like the yellow, red, orange, blue flakes blasting out of a windows logo (I don't know why but that's what I can think of). Of course the Roboto font which is very noticeable system wide. In honeycomb, to unlock a device, just drag the encircled padlock outside the bigger circle, now you can only drag the padlock to either the left, which will open the camera app right away, or to the right, which will totally unlock the device. In the notifications bar, instead of tapping the "x" to dismiss, now, you have to "flick" or slide the notification to dismiss. Also, the glowing blue of honeycomb has been replaced with a brighter teal and a more dynamic set of icons on the task bar.

Motorola Xoom Ice Cream Sandwich Update

I've been expecting this since ICS was announced. Last week, Motorola sent an email to Xoom Wifi owners that are members of the Xoom support forum that Motorola will conduct a "project" involving the device and it's owners. The project turned out to be private beta testers for the release build of Ice Cream Sandwich. The "project" was started at the end of the week, to span the whole weekend to test the build for any problems that users might encounter. This is a pretty quick test really.

Expecting that this is really ICS, I kept on check for any updates over the weekend (although I'm not part of the private beta testers), hoping to catch an update. No news either was being put out on when the real update will come out. Early this afternoon, I was wondering why my internet connection was a bit slow, since browsing bored me, I played around the Xoom and when I got to the System Update part of the settings, lo and behold, the device has downloaded most of the update and is in the verge of the reboot, though nothing in the download page says anything about ICS or what the update is all about.

After the install and reboot, the Roboto font greeted me in the installation proper, this confirmed my nerdgasm and a new splash sreen was flashing to my eyes. After it, my Motorola Xoom was new again! With Ice Cream Sandwich!!!

Progress Bar in BlackBerry Messaging app

I don't know if this has been here before, but I just found out while sending an email, you can highlight the message and a progress bar will hover giving you information as to how much was uploaded already. Nifty trick!

Send & Receive SMS from your Android Phone using your PC

Here are 3 applications (solutions) that I've used, which you might find useful when you're in the office or at home.

1.) Mightytxt

This one I've used the longest. It started as Texty and eventually evolved into Mightytxt. Install the app on your phone, then a counterpart extension is available for Chrome, which means you can use it in both Mac, Windows & Linux environments. It's been very accurate but a little slow to send sms. I don't know if you can call it an advantage, because even if your phone is not connected to the same wireless network, notifications will arrive/pop up on your desktop. So those who are on unlimited data plans, even if your phone is in the office, and your in the house, you can still get your messages (or until the battery lasts). So, if you're asking why I still have the two other apps below? Well, I want to get alerts on my Android tablet as well, which means, even when I'm on the road, with 2 phones and a tablet, it would be better if I don't have to bring out every gadget just to check my sms.

Which brought me to....
2.) MySMS

You also install an app on the phone. There's a Chrome app (not an extension) counterpart, but it's just an HTML5 site, which means, any device that has an HTML5 compatible browser (which is almost every browser out there)...which also means, I can use it on my non-Android tablet (BlackBerry Playbook), because Android tablets (Honeycomb & Ice Cream Sandwich) have their own app. Just like mightTxt your Android smartphone doesn't have to be in the same network for it to work, as long as the phone has data connection (wifi or data plan), it will work.

And the last app that I'm trying out is....
3.) Airdroid

This one needs to have your phone on the same wireless network as the device you're going to use to access the phone. And no counterpart application is needed to be on the accessing device (e.g. tablet, pc). Because once the phone app has been activated, it will give you an IP address and a dynamic password which you'll type on any web browser, input the password, and you're connected to your phone.

It's going to be a bit tricky because, you can use the mobile router function of the smartphone to link your accessing device (tablet) with the phone, but this will also increase the draining of the battery of the smartphone. But then again, it's another option right? Hope this helps.

Upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich

Yup! My Motorola Xoom is now running Android 4.0.3! Wooohooo!

The Roboto Font

Change in font is confirming the "suspicion"! Damn, good to have a GED (Google Experience Device)

Restarting

After the "surprise" update. Waiting for the reboot! Still in nerdgasm!

If you have a wifi only Android tablet & you also own an Android phone w/ data plan, you can send & receive text messages on the tablet with this application. Just install the app in both devices and off you go typing on your tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 plus

I guess this is the real next generation Galaxy Tab. It's 7 inches, runs on Android and....it's a phone!

Handled one tonight and this tablet is thin and light. Very easy to lug around and since it's loaded with Honeycomb (and the potential Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade), you can do more things with it than the iPad. What I'm skeptic though is the use of the virtual keyboard. On how small it will be. I guess Swype and TouchPal keyboards will shine on this device. But mostly people will just be using the Tab to consume media rather than to create one.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2 Native Email, Calendar & Contacts Demo! - YouTube: ""

Here's a preview of the upcoming Playbook OS2. It's a year delayed, but, according to RIM, is on time for the February release and will be available for free as a download for current Playbook owners and pre-installed to those who will buy the tablet come February.

The video features the native PIM applications on the Playbook. Note that this does not pass thru the Bridge app which means, it's accessible with or without a BlackBerry phone.

The Messaging app is a unified app where emails, status updates (twitter, linkedin) are found. It has also tabs to make composition of multiple emails rather easy. And as RIM is known for, the messaging app can hold both work and personal email at the same time.

Wireless Internet Connection, Pinoy style

I'm so amazed by wireless internet, it makes me feel "connected" while mobile. Something that is only seen in the movies when I was growing up. Now a reality. In the Philippines, there are several companies that offer wireless internet. I guess, for a country that has several island, wired connection nationwide can be very hard to achieved (but can be if one really wants to), and wireless is the next best thing.

Wireless technology is maturing very fast, as wired speed are being achieved in a short span of time. But there are things about wireless internet that subscribers should know. One important thing is, it's wireless...which means it uses the airwaves to send data signals to and from your computer, and with that, a lot of interference is met along the way. That is why, when it comes to reliability, wired connections are still the way to go.

But in the Philippines, we tend to lead towards short cuts. It is with these short cuts that we think we are being "short-changed". What do I mean? The easiest and fastest way to get connected is to buy a prepaid USB modem stick, load it up and you're already surfing. It's cheap and fast. One doesn't have to wait for the technicians to come over, survey the place, install cables and wires, then wait for the activation from the closest station.

Those USB modem sticks are ok, but it wasn't made to be the primary internet connection. It was meant for mobility, short instances of needing internet connection. It wasn't made to be used to download huge files. Not for torrenting. But in the Philippines, subscribers would burn telcos if they don't get the advertised speed, even if it is clearly stated that the advartised speed isn't the actual speed.

Some even uses these wireless internet connections for their Internet Shop connections. Really now? Cause if you're going to ask me, if you're putting up a net shop, you should know a lot about the hardware, the software and the networking components of the business, and part of that is getting a wired DSL/Cable connection. Not to mention, you should be paying Business rates.

Faster battery draining of the BlackBerry

Lately, I've noticed that the battery of my BlackBerry Bold has been draing faster than usual. And it's not charging as fast as it should even if I'm already using the fast charger (BlackBerry Playbook charger).

Maybe there's an app that's constantly pinging it's servers. I turned of Facebook Messenger just now, will see if it's the culprit. My next suspect is Whatsapp Messenger. I will know at the end of the day.

Wi-tribe testing update - SM Mall of Asia

Continued with testing the mobile router from Wi-tribe. Today, felt some sluggishness in the clinic but still tolerable, was getting around 1Mbps on a 2Mbps plan. I think it's more of an area problem than the cloudy skies.

In the afternoon, it was raining, tested it and got consistent fast speeds close to 2Mbps. Lost signal inside the department store and Toy Kingdom of SM Mall of Asia but was able to get very good signals in the main mall corridor and so as inside Pizza Hut.

Globe DSL Cap

Just learned today that Globe has implemented capping on their DSL subscribers.

According to Globe's twitter Customer Service @talk2globe my 2Mbps bundled line has a 5GB/day or 150GB/mo cap. Once reached, subscribed speed will be reduced to 30% of the supposed speed.

I'm ok with capping as long as Globe would be able to give me the speed that I've subscribed to.

Signal Testing of Wi-Tribe...update

So far so good, last night tried it in Greenbelt Makati, I was satisfied, today in clinic 1, I'm getting very strong signal on the device!

From the time I got the Wi-tribe 4G Pocket Router, I immediately tested it's signal...from Shanri-la EDSA to the stretch of EDSA, to Macapagal Blvd, Coastal Rd., Aguinaldo Highway and the house.

That night, I went here to clinic 1 and was suprised to get strong Wi-max signal considering this is officially not part of the covered area. But I wasn't able to try it indoors that night. Today, I didn't get any signal in the reception, but when I went up to the 2nd floor, I got a very good signal strength.

I'm left with clinic 2 later to test the signal.

The Road to Wi-tribe Pocket Wifi

Today I didn't stop until I got what I want, and that is a Pocket Wifi. Either a SmartBro Pocket Wifi or a Wi-tribe Pocket Wifi.

It's one of those days, when the itch of getting a new device is there. This time, it's getting a MiFi (pocket wifi). I already have an unlimited data account with Globe (using it with my Blackberry), I can use it too with my BlackBerry Playbook. But Globe has been inconsistent with their 3G connections the past few months, though I can't say I'm not satisfied...when I get a 3G signal with Globe, it's blazing fast!

My other line is from SUN (I consider this as an investment coz pretty soon they'll be integrating with Smart's network...which is very intensive), I use it on my HTC Desire Z Gingerbread phone. This one is my workhorse. I tether my tablets with it in the car and in the clinic. But the trade off is, it drains the battery fast. That's why, whenever I use it as a portable router, I make sure it's attached to a charger, but somehow, I feel restricted whenever I do that.

When our DSL line conked out a couple of weeks ago, I bought a SmartBro Power Plug-it and was very much satisfied with the speed that I got from it. That was when I was emboldened to get another wireless device so I can be connected. At first I thought the SmartBro Power Plug-it was ok, if I use it together with my Sapido Mobile Router, then it can be as good as a pocket router, but then I found out that I have to lug a bag every time and depend on an available electric socket. Besides, it's a prepaid dongle, and I have to worry if I have load and where to load.

Then I thought of getting the SmartBro WiMax...but it's bulky! Still, I considered it. Especially that I can use it when I'm in the province. Then I thought of Wi-tribe, it's a new provider...from Liberty Telecoms, which is owned by San Miguel Corporation, a newbie in the telco sector, but aggressive in their marketing. At first, Wi-tribe was negligible, since they were offering tiered pricing at speeds not even comparable with those of the established networks. And their prices were expensive for the speeds they were offering. But then again, now they are offering speeds and plans that compares with the other telcos.

I was ready to get the USB modem from Wi-tribe, heck I was even convinced of getting the bigger modems. I've psyched myself to it. I even went to one of their business center and was surprised with the speed they showed me. The only downside is, well, the coverage...only parts of Metro Manila. But the plus side is, well, no lock-in period! I can return the modem & have the line disconnected any time!

I found out that they have a pocket wifi modem too...not as pretty as Smart's or Globe's but a pocket wifi altogether. So I researched the web (not a lot of info about wi-tribe though). And convinced myself to get one. Then the other day, saw an ad about Smart's Pocket Wifi, so it went back into the choices.

So I said, which ever will not give me difficulty getting a device, that's what I'm getting. I went to Eastwood before lunch coz that's what @witribePH from twitter pointed me to get my device. Unfortunately, their store was closed and there was no Smart Wireless Center there too. So I went to Shangri-la EDSA this afternoon (since it's one place where Smart & Wi-tribe have showrooms), went to Smart Wireless Center 1st, I only have a copy of my Billing info, no financial document, but the girl at the counter insisted on the financial docs, so I went next door to Wi-tribe...they didn't ask for any financial document...I got the device!

Globe Tattoo DSL modem

Here's what the Globe tech guy installed when my DSL connection was down last week.

I haven't checked the whole whole thing, but while I was mounting it, the modem felt cheap and light, not like the previous modems I had.

Even the LED indicator lights look cheap! Perhaps it's the same reason why I feel like I'm not getting the right speed that I'm subscribed to.

Globelines DSL Downtime

Yup! I still call it Globelines DSL instead of Tattoo since I still have the @globelines email hehehe. Anyways, I've been a subscriber of Globelines ever since they started rolling out in our area in Cavite...my very 1st "broadband" modem was a Speedtouch USB modem...which gave I think around 756kbps (I think). Well, they have very few downtimes...the longest before this one was I think when the subterranean cables where cut by the earthquake in Indonesia.

Most of the times, when I call their "hotline", they can either solve the problem immediately or admit that there's a network downtime but the last few months have been difficult between me and Globe.

I have been happy with the speed and the wireless modem/router that Globe issued me. It's a Prolink H9300G...and have been very consistent with the connections. I'm subscribed to their 2Mbps plan bundled with a phone. But lately, around a month ago, i've noticed that the modem would restart all by itself. Initially it was tolerable then it became frequent and irritating. I called the hotline and a tech guy went to our place the next day and with a little prodding I was able to convince the guy to replace the modem (although I was hesitant as replacing the modem might compromise the speed that I'm currently enjoying...which I still am not sure if it was a valid fear though).

After a couple of weeks of enjoying the new modem (which by the way I moved to a location that is directly connected to the phone line box), last friday, when I got home, I didn't have any internet...restarted the modem more than a couple of times and still no connection. Called the hotline and a tech guy (the same guy who replaced my modem) was in the house the next day...Saturday, but unfortunately, even after changing ports and numerous changing of the password, they were not able to connect even with the DSL light on (means my modem is synced with the network). I was told that another techguy will come the next day, Sunday, and as unreliable as their customer service, no one came. And from that time until Wednesday I was able to to call their hotline and berate every broadband tech specialist I've talked to.

Globe's current customer service is outsourced to a BPO and these call center agents does not have any direct communication with the Globe people in the field and take not too that these field people are sub-contractors and not directly Globe people. So, it's really frustrating for a customer since the internal communication really sucks as the frontliners really just receive calls and that's it! They can't even update the irate customer unless the field personnel would create a report.

It's unfortunate that a company like Globe would be brought down by their after-sales and technical people who are, in reality not part of the company.

SmartBro Power Plug-It

Here's my new friend. Finally, I have USB modem of every major telco in the country!

I actually have 2 modems from Globe (their Visibility line).

Why do I have get another one you might ask, since I already have 2? Well, it so happens that I don't have 3G signal of Globe and Sun in the house. And luckily, SmartBro has and was able to give me my temporary internet fix while my Globelines DSL was down!
