Disappointing Data Charges on Freedom Plan

Got my latest bill from @smartcares and I was surprised to see that I have been billed for data connection. Surprising because, after my experience on my first week with the Freedom plan, I decided to just finish my BB unlimited subscription and just keep the SIM as a back up. 

Unfortunately I was wrong. I kept the SIM in the Blackberry and at one time, left the Blackberry on...albeit connected to my home wireless network. Then I got this month's bill charging me P400++ all for data connection! It's really an OMG moment!

Was supposed to use this as an alternative to Upvise but unfortunately, they don't have counterpart apps for Android and BlackBerry. I'm still looking for a simple note taking app that I can access offline and across my devices.

One of the most fun parts about any new Apple OS update is discovering the more subtle tweaks that its designers have made. In the case of yesterday's freshly minted iOS 6.1, there's one change that seems merely cosmetic at first but after a while you can't help but wonder why it wasn't made sooner. We're talking about the newly redesigned lock screen music controls (above) which are displayed when you press the Home button twice on the lock screen.

Not only have the controls been modified to look like the ones found within the Music app, but more importantly they're laid out the same, too. This means that unlike in previous iOS releases (shown below) they're no longer so close together that you can accidentally press play/pause when trying to select the next or previous track. Like in the Music app, the previous and next buttons are located near the sides of the screen.

The volume slider has gotten an overhaul to be consistent with the Music app, too, and also uses your device's accelerometer to change the reflection on the knob as you tilt it -- another "it's in the details" element to make you grin.

Watch A Volvo Semi Truck Narrowly Avoid Collision Using Automatic Braking Technology [VIDEO]

Volvo, the Swedish automaker long-known for its safety innovations, has taken to applying its passenger car safety systems to commercial semi trucks.

The new Volvo FH semi recently demonstrated a collision warning and emergency brake system. The system uses radar and a camera to detect vehicles in front of the truck and alert the driver of danger with a flashing light and alarm tone. If the driver does not respond to a potential rear-end situation, the system will apply the brakes to avoid a crash.

While the video below shows just how well the system can work, keep in mind that the tractor trailer is fully loaded with 40 tons of cargo.

Volvo Trucks has developed Collision Warning with Emergency Brake - an advanced emergency braking system equipped with early collision warning to help prevent severe accidents caused by inattention.

Rear-end collisions account for a significant proportion of road accidents. In order to address this problem, Volvo Trucks has developed Collision Warning with Emergency Brake - an advanced emergency braking system which also includes early collision warning. The braking system, which is available on the new Volvo FH Series, has been developed to support the driver so that the majority of these rear-end collisions can be avoided or mitigated.

"We began by asking 'what really is the problem?'. The answer is inattention. If you watched the traffic ahead of you the whole time, you wouldn't need systems like these," says Carl Johan Almqvist, Traffic & Product Safety Director, Volvo Trucks.

The new system combines a radar and a camera that work together to identify and monitor vehicles in front. The system is designed to deal with both stationary and moving vehicles and can prevent a collision with a moving target at relative speeds of up to 70 km/h. When the system detects a vehicle that the truck will hit at its current speed, the warning system activates a constant red light in the windscreen in order to bring the driver's attention back to the road.

"We don't want to take over from drivers because we believe they are in the best position to respond, as they might be able to safely drive around the vehicle," says Almqvist.

However, if the truck fails to detect any reaction from the driver, such as steering or braking, the system upgrades to a flashing red light and a beeping sound. If there is still no reaction, the system applies the brakes gently. When all this fails, the system activates the emergency braking system and does everything possible to bring the truck to a complete stop.

"In the vast majority of cases, the initial warning signals will attract the driver's attention. And in the rare case that they don't, the emergency braking system will still help prevent a serious accident," says Carl Johan Almqvist.

In Europe, emergency braking systems will be a legal requirement in new trucks by November 2015.

Flipboard updated to support Android 4.2 Daydream feature

Flipboard for Android was updated today, and along with a fix for "accidental" flipping and some minor bug fixes, there is a major feature added in -- support for Android 4.2's Daydream feature. Flipboard says this "allows you to create a screensaver made out of Flipboard covers," and that's a pretty good description.

You won't find any new settings inside the Flipboard app itself, but if you open the display settings on your Jelly Bean 4.2 device you'll see Flipboard listed under the different Daydream modes. The screensaver itself is well done, with the zooming and gently panning of images you'll find in the Photo Table Daydream provided by Google. It uses the entries in our Cover stories category, so you'll probably want to adjust those a bit.

It's more media centric than the Currents Daydream, and lacks a lot of textual information, but we're really excited to see a major player take advantage of the tools Google provides to make unique and awesome apps. Grab the update or install the app for the first time from the link above.

The built-in microphone on your iOS device is fine for conversations, but when it comes to recording high-quality audio, it's somewhat inadequate. Rode's new iXY 30-pin plug-in microphone changes that, offering true stereo recording and companion apps that boasts a litany of audio customization options.

Two versions of Rode's iOS app are available; A free version with limited options and a fully-featured version for $5.99 that includes a full equalizer, high and low-pass filters, and one-touch sharing via Dropbox, email, and more. The iXY is now available for $199, and is only compatible with 30-pin devices, so iPhone 5 owners are unfortunately out of luck.

Sony halts PlayStation 2 production after 150 million worldwide sales

Reports that Sony was no longer shipping PlayStation 2 models have been confirmed by The Guardian. The Japanese manufacturer told the newspaper that it will no longer manufacture its massively-successful home console. Sony has sold over 150 million PlayStation 2s since its release in October 2000, and has continued to sell and produce the console despite the PlayStation 3 launching in 2006. All good things come to an end, though, and given that a successor to the PlayStation 3 is widely expected to launch later this year it makes sense that it wouldn't want to sell three home consoles simultaneously.

Although hardly original – it obviously borrowed its format from several other popular tycoon type of games (Lemonade Tycoon, Fish Tycoon to name a few) – Streetfood Tycoon first gained notice early last year, earning over a thousand users by May 2012.

Google and Kia partnership will bring Google Maps and Places to new cars this year

Korean car-maker Kia is set to give its UVO eServices telematics a huge shot in the arm, teaming up with Google to offer its next-generation navigation system. The new setup will debut in this year's Sorento CUV, which is scheduled to arrive in Q1. Kia's updated (once Microsoft-assisted) UVO system will allow users to send directions and locales from their smartphone (or the web) to your new ride. Baked-in Google Places will also inform you of your nearest dealership (even when you're already in that new Kia) while existing music management, hands-free features and improved voice recognition will all be wrapped into the same interface. Hackulous iOS app community closes

Jailbreakers and users of cracked iOS apps have one less thing to be happy about this New Year's Eve. Hackulous, the cracked app community for iOS, shut down as of yesterday.

Along with Hackulous, Apptrackr -- which was a web-based index of cracked apps -- and Installous -- an app that was used to transfer cracked apps to iOS devices -- also shut down. The Hackulous team announced the shutdown in a statement that "After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff."

Many in the jailbreak and cracked app community are not buying the story, noting that Hackulous still had many users. The Installous app was allegedly generating a lot of revenue for the team, as ads were served to users every time they performed an app-related action in the software.

TorrentFreak attempted to contact Dissident, the admin of the Hackulous projects, for a statement, but he appears to be lying low. In the past, Dissident often preached about the need for users to be able to try out apps before buying them. Since trial apps are now more available, TorrentFreak speculates that Dissident may have felt the Hackulous "mission was over".

Another possible reason for the closure could just be that there's no iOS 6 jailbreak coming soon. No jailbreak means that Installous and even the legal Cydia "alternative app store" will not function on new iOS devices. Whatever the reason behind the closing of Hackulous, it's certainly a blow for the jailbreak community.

Installing a clean copy of Windows 8 on a new, crapware-infested PC is even easier than it was in Windows 7.

We may have a new version of Windows, but one story is still the same: buying a new Windows 8 PC means that you're also buying a bunch of OEM-installed software that you didn't ask for. This software ranges from the innocuous (Office 2010 demos) to the unnecessary (paid anti-virus trials, despite Windows 8's baked-in antivirus scanner) to the actively useless (WildTangent games and unending superfluous system tray icons).

Much of this software can simply be uninstalled with no harm done, but if something goes wrong with your PC and you need to reinstall Windows, all of that crapware will usually come right back with it. For years now, most OEMs have neglected to include a "vanilla" Windows install disk with their computers, opting rather to include some sort of "restore partition" with all of the crapware baked in—this makes it difficult to perform a truly "clean" install of the operating system. On some computers, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, these recovery materials dramatically reduce the amount of drive space accessible by the user.

To help out those of you who are planning to buy new PCs—or got them from Santa Claus—but don't want to deal with all of this junk, we're going to update our original Windows 7 bloatware removal guide for Microsoft's latest operating system. Parts of the following will be transplanted from that article where appropriate, but while the reasons for performing a clean Windows install are the same, the actual process is often surprisingly different.

Linkedin for BlackBerry smartphones updated - but we need more from it

LinkedIn got a welcome update over the weekend to version 2.1.0.37 but unfortunately the improvements were pretty minor. The new features just include contact sync & login improvements and although this is a step in the right direction it isn't quite enough for me.

While it is great that we now have a LinkedIn application for BlackBerry smartphones it's still lagging behind in terms of functionality compared to the Android and iOS versions. What I need from the app is proper notifications. If I have the app on my BlackBerry I don't want to get and email telling me I have message - I want the app to tell me and give me a Splat.

HTC One S getting its Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update with Sense 4+

Not sure that pushing out OS updates on Christmas Eve is the wisest of moves, but we're not going to knock them either. HTC's following in Motorola's footsteps today, pushing out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for the international One S. The 612-megabyte update (jeez, that's big) brings the software version up to 3.16.401.8 (for those of you keeping track at home).

Bullet points for the update include:

• Android 4.1.1 and HTC Sense 4+
• Enhanced UI with better performance in Camera
• New landing page and event/map view in gallery
• Power management improvement

We're installing now. This sucker's big.

If you think that NASA's new Z–1 spacesuit prototype looks a lot like Buzz Lightyear, you are not alone. The agency recently concluded a round of tests on the new kit's mobility, testing its fit, range of motion, and the ease of getting in and out of it in reduced gravity.

The Z–1 is a big departure from the current EMU spacesuit in two ways. First, astronauts enter and exit the suit from the back (it has a hatchback) rather than putting the top and bottom on separately, which should make "donning and doffing" faster and less likely to cause injury. We hope you've had a chance to try the new Google Maps app for iPhone (announced last week and available for download in the Apple App Store). The app is designed to be simple—just to work whenever you need it. Still, we have a few tips to make finding things with Google Maps even faster and easier. All the tips are collected on our site but here a few of my favorites:
Swipe to see more. In Google Maps a wealth of information is often just a swipe away. Whether you're looking at search results or directions, you can swipe the bottom info sheet left and right to see other options. To get more details on any of the results, swipe that info sheet upward (or just tap it—that works too). Even with the info sheet expanded, you can swipe to see those other results. Place a pin. Get more information about any location by just pressing and holding the map. The info sheet that pops up tells you the address, lets you save or share the place, and best of all, brings up... Street View. By far the easiest way to get to Street View is placing a pin. Tap the imagery preview on the info sheet to enter into Street View, then explore! I recommend the look-around feature (bottom left button) which changes what you're looking at as you tilt and move your phone. Want to learn more? See the rest of our tips on the site. The BlackBerry PlayBook OS has been updated today to version 2.1.0.1314. It's a small update at just 37mb with support for AIR and Flash for developers. You can expect the usual tweaks and fixes to go along with this one as well. Not the biggest update for most users as it doesn't bring any fun new features, but an update is and update, right? 'Cut the Rope' creators release first new game 'Pudding Monsters' in App Store

Cut the Rope was a huge success on various mobile platforms, so it's no surprise that its Russian developer ZeptoLab went all-out on spin-offs and merchandising. Today, though, the company releases its first new game since that runaway hit: Pudding Monsters is now rolling out across the iOS App Store (unfortunately in separate iPhone and iPad versions), with an Android version also due. It's a puzzle game that involves sticking blobs of personified desserts together, though the art style isn't too far removed from Cut the Rope. Speaking to Bloomberg, Zeptolab says that the game is just the first in a series of new properties from the studio.

Tumblr updates its app with iPad support and Explore tab, ends day of Android envy

More than a month after launching its native iOS app and a day after releasing a tablet-friendly layout on Android, blog network Tumblr has updated its app to support Apple's tablets. It's also added markdown support and a new Explore tab, but the big bonus for iPad owners is sharing Community GIFs and other memes without having to slog through that silly 2x zoom of an iPhone menu. The free app is in iTunes now, check for the latest update or just hit the link below to try it out yourself.

Google+ Builds Stronger Ties To Blogger, Now Lets You Mention Other Users In Your Posts

If you're using Blogger for your daily personal or business writings, you might be happy to know that it has gotten a bit more of the Google+ social treatment, thanks to a new feature that is a welcomed addition. We haven't heard much about Google's blogging platform since it's redesign in March of last year, sadly. This is the platform that Ev Williams, co-founder of Twitter, sold to Google in 2003.

You can now mention anyone on Google+ within your post, and they'll see it as a notification. Good way to get people's attention, also a good way to provide context to your content.

Here's what Blogger's Maite Ubi had to say about it:

Now you can add a link to a Google+ profile or page when you want to mention someone in a post. If you then share your post from Blogger to Google+, we make it easier to notify your mentions by including them in the sharebox.

To mention someone, just type "+" before their name while you're using the Blogger post editor.

The profile or page will show up as a link in your published post. Hovering over will show a card with more info and an 'Add to circles' button. Clicking the link takes you straight to the Google+ profile or page.

You could also use this feature when you're writing about a brand or page on Google+, but sadly you can't pump up one of your new Communities just yet. Doing this will then provide that needed context and attention-grabbing, too. Is this an earth-shattering feature? No, but it's a demonstration of Google's continuing promise to tie all of its products together with a "social spine", which is of course Google+. Which is of course, just Google.

You've been able to tie your Google+ account to your Blogger profile for some time now, but it's becoming clearer as to why you'd want to do that, with features like this.

You can use Google+ in a private way, or an overly social way, it's up to you. Choice is good.

Instagram promises to address anger over new terms of service 'soon'

Instagram has promised to address widespread confusion and anger over its new terms of service "soon." In a tweet, the company said it knows the new language is "raising a lot of questions," and that it would "have more to share." We'll see what the company has to say — there's a lot to clarify here.

Google Calendar adds more actionable notifications, location improvements

Google has updated the Calendar app to improve notifications, location entry and event creation today. We were very happy to see Google break Calendar out of Android and make it available to everyone (provided the device is on 4.0.3 or higher) in the Play Store back in October, and now we're seeing the fruits of that decision because updates can be rolled out independent of the OS.

Now when you create an event, the app will suggest proper locations as you type. For example when I type "Starbucks" in the location field, it will suggest specific addresses of store locations, much like the location field in Google Maps does currently. Additionally, when you receive a notification for the event, you can act on it by either snoozing or going directly to a map view of the location in the event.

This is a great update and we're glad Google is improving even on its most basic apps. It is an interesting update, however, because this is functionality that's already included as part of Google Now, which will alert you of upcoming events and even adjust the alert time based on traffic or other appointments. This is a good stopgap for devices that are on Ice Cream Sandwich and can use the new Calendar but not Google Now, but that group of devices will only be getting smaller as time goes on.

Google 'winter cleaning' is coming, Google Sync and Calendar features are going away

We're nearing the end of 2012, and that means Google is doing some "winter cleaning" around the office and some less-popular services are going away. Google will be shutting down several services related to sync and calendar, all within the next month. First, several Google Calendar features are going away -- reservable times can no longer be created in appointment slots, but currently set slots will remain for one year. Two calendar "labs" features are going away as well: "Smart Rescheduler" and "Add gadget by URL." Google is also removing features that let users check and make appointments via SMS. 

Next, traditional Google Sync is going away -- this was the protocol that let users sync their mail, contacts and calendar to devices via the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. With the introduction of CardDAV and CalDav, Google can now offer much the same service with the IMAP protocol instead. Google Sync will shut down to new users on January 30, 2013, but will remain active for anyone that sets it up prior and all Google Apps users.

It sounds like a doomsday scenario of Google services getting shut down, but most users won't notice. Android syncs natively with Google Apps and therefore won't be affected by the Google Sync shutdown. You may want to take a look if you happen to use any of these Google Calendar tools, though.
